O artista utiliza um esbo\u00e7o de 1811, realizado pelo espi\u00e3o espanhol Guzm\u00e1n Larra para come\u00e7ar sua obra. Setenta anos antes, Larra havia sido contratado para acabar com a vida de Artigas e acabou testemunhando os anseios de seus oito mil companheiros.
