A victim of sexual violence at school at the age of seven, Karol—a Black transgender woman from the urban periphery—has endured countless traumas from an early age. After her parents died while she was still a child, she ended up on the streets, which she sees as an intermittent home, surviving day by day and repeatedly being driven from her tent amid assaults by the municipal guard. In the past, illicit activities led to her imprisonment, where she suffered immeasurable abuse and violence and contracted HIV. Without resources or support from the state, she faces multiple hardships every day, with few prospects for her future.
